2008... The Dark Road to Somewhere...
This post is from the archives, 2008...
A writer writes when a writer writes… A.K
“River River carry me home, River River carry me home to the place I come from…”
-- Peter Gabriel
Well… This is not going to be easy. So here we go again. It’s been awhile since I last wrote some gibberish and for good reason… I’m a few miles up the road from where I began the year. And the shoes I started this year’s trademark journey, no longer fit.
Indeed; I never expected them to last that long anyways. (Here’s where you realize your brain just read between the lines and said, “Oh, a metaphor.”)
Because I am genetically predisposed toward uncertainty, chance and at times danger, it comes as no surprise that I have been in and out, on and off, side to side, up and down, between the brackets and gone the distance every which way I could, or not, in this year of madness I have come to call, “The dark road to somewhere.” (2008)
The only constant this year offers, which at times was touch and go, has been the resilience of my inner voice, the ideas for stories, for film, for paper that fill my head every ten minutes, in the strangest of places and moments. And of course the few good friends who were there when it counted most.
What was this year’s nourishment you ask?
Ahh… It was the stuff you hear cowboys sing about over a campfire. It was the feeling you first got when you cracked open Kerouac’s “On the Road Again." It was the day you knew your life would never be the same again. It was the evening you first saw her and your heart beat a million miles and hour and you felt the earth move. It was the moment you decided to learn a new language because you fell in love. It was the first time you held her hand. It was the noisy airport morning when you told her, “You will always be this moment to me.” It was the day you booked your ticket to a far away place because your heart’s compass” led you that way.” It was the day you felt merciless to the power of love. It was the first time you saw her face. It was that one early morning when she walked out the door and the knife cut through your heart. It was the hole you fell into when you weren’t looking but knew was there. It was the day the seam split and you hung your head. It was the day you were stranded on the side of the road on route 40 in the middle of the desert and you never felt so lost or alone. It was the moment you forgot everything you ever learned and you held your head in your hands. It was night when you didn’t feel like waking up the next day. It was the day when you shed a tear for a politician in late autumn. It was the evening sunset that reminded you to have faith, to stand your ground. It was the day you blew away the dreams that tore you apart. It was the afternoon you adopted her and gave her a warm home with love. It was the night you wanted to explode and cut the pain from your heart. It was the morning you woke that became an afternoon that turned into an evening that found you knee deep in the autumn grass of a country field staring at the stars with the universe unfolded before you and you realized just how much it meant to be in that moment, that space of time, that you would never be in again…
It was the year you thought it would take an act of will to see through...2008
