Avenues of the Dead
Riding the subway across town to go and get a bite to eat.
I sit down at the end of the carriage.
An older lady smiles in my direction.
I smile back. She's quite attractive.
She radiates loneliness and kindness.
The man beside her has dark black eyes.
He's young. Head like Moose.
He talks loudly to his half asleep friend about his new pair of shoes.
I think to myself, why did I sit here?
The subway door opens.
A man enters.
His arms reach down past his knees.
He's awkward, tall and lanky.
Avoids eye contact.
Stares at the ground.
He stands by the doors staring at the floor.
Maybe the next stop a beautiful girl will walk in and sit beside me.
Am I in the wrong carriage?
The next stop is St. Patrick.
The Doors open.
An Old Guy enters.
He's got crazy blue eyes.
Unshaven face. Scruffy clothes.
He Looks around. Peers at people.
He radiates of sinister motives.
He looks in my direction.
Shouts loudly,"What the Devil is going on in here?"
I laugh, looking up from my lap into his eyes.
I was born to hustle life down the avenues of the dead...
